About

Are we mad! Walking 14 miles! I guess we are, but then we're not as we have so much to thank Moorfields for.

So, why are we doing this? Max begun as a patient at Moorfields when he was 3 months old after he had been diagnosed with a rare disorder - Congenital Bilateral Ptosis – where his eyelids hung so excessively over his pupils due to poor levator muscles in both his eyes; so he could only see downwards and not much else. Our wonderful Consultant, Mr Uddin, recommended an operation to lift his eyelids and thus when Max was 7 months he could see properly for the first time. Without this operation we feared Max would have given up trying to focus and may have lost his sight all together. He also started to crawl and sit up - he didn’t have the balance before.

A second temporary operation followed at age 2. Then, at age 8, when he had developed more, Max had an auto-genus fascia-lata operation (where they removed a muscle from his leg and put it into his eyes). Finally he really, really could see properly. Other than glasses which transition in bright lights - i.e. become tinted, as he is photophobic – he was signed off from the hospital at the age of 9 – much as we liked the place, having been there too many times to mention – it was a relief not to go there again.

His work flourished and although his gross motor skills have been delayed, he is the same as any regular teenager.

We have decided to join the 14-mile Eye-to-Eye walk for Moorfields so as to give back as we are beyond grateful for all they have done for Max. At every single visit to the hospital for the first 9 years of his life, Max (and us) was treated with the utmost respect and consideration. We cannot thank Moorfields enough and so we have decided to take on this arduous fete to give back.

Please donate so that Moorfields can continue to do the amazing work it is globally renowned for.

Small acts of kindness like your donation can make a big difference!
